Ganesh Chaturthi 2019 – Description

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha. Believed to have been born during Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month, Lord Ganesh is worshipped as the Lord of wisdom, good fortune and prosperity.

The festival lasts for 10 days and the last day is the day of Ganesh Visarjan which is also known as Anant Chaturdashi. On the last day, devotees immerse the idols of Lord Ganesh in a water body after a grand procession.

Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Ganesh Chauth and Vinayak Chaturthi. While the festival is celebrated all over the country, the grandest and most elaborate of celebrations can be witnessed in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana.

About Lord Ganesha

Lord Ganesha is the son of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva and the brother of Lord Kartikeya. Ganesha is one of the most popular Gods of the Hindu religion. He is also known as Vinayak and Ganpati.

Lord Ganesha is represented as having an elephant head with a human body. He is depicted with four hands carrying a goad, and a noose in the upper hands. On the lower hands one shows him holding a bowl full of modak and the other hand in Abhay Mudra.

Lord Ganesha is the embodiment of three virtues wisdom, spirituality and prosperity, known as Buddhi, Siddhi and Riddhi. The virtues of Siddhi and Riddhi are considered to be the consorts of Lord Ganesha and are Goddesses. As per scriptures, Lord Ganesha had two sons named Shubha (prosperity, wellbeing and luck) and Labha (profit).

Lord Ganesha is worshipped in all His 32 different forms. However, as per Maudgal Purana the most significant and known forms are the Ashta Vinyanak (8 incarnations). These are namely, Vakratunda, Ekadanta, Mahodara, Gajanana, Lambodara, Vikata, Vighnaraja, and Dhumravarna.

Ganesh Chaturthi Observance

  • • Buying a Lord Ganesh idol
  • • Fasting for the entire day
  • • Installing the idol of Ganpati with all the rituals
  • • Shodashopachara Ganesh Puja on Ganesh Chaturthi during Madhyahna
  • • Avoid sighting of the moon
  • • For all 10 days of the festival worshipping Lord Ganesha daily
  • • Preparing dishes for Ganesh Chaturthi – Modak, Besan Laddu, Jaggery and Til (Sesame) Laddu, and Motichoor Laddu
  • • Immersion of the idol of Ganesha on Anant Chaturdashi with all rituals

During the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, Lord Ganesha is worshipped with all 16 rituals known as Shodashopachara Puja along with chanting of Ganesh Mantras and Puranik Mantras. Madhyahnakala is the preferred time to perform Ganesh Puja.

Sankalpa and Deep-Prajawalan are done before starting the Puja.

  • • Puja should begin with the invocation of Lord Ganesha by showing Avahan Mudra and chanting mantras.
  • • After invoking Lord Ganesh, His idol is installed
  • • After installing the idol, offer five flowers of Anjali
  • • Offer water to wash Lord Ganesha’s feet
  • • Give a bath using Panchamrita and continue to chant
  • • Give a bath with Gangajal and offer Moli
  • • Offer Yajnopavita
  • • Offer Durva, Vermillion, and dhoop
  • • Offer Sandalwood Paste, coconut, paan with supari, gifts, flowers, and sweets
  • • In the end, perform Lord Ganesha Aarti

Recommended Rudraksha for Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Rudraksha

Presence of a trunk like stem in a Rudraksha is called Ganesh Rudraksha. The Ganesh Rudraksha is believed to remove obstacles, brings luck and prosperity and also gives blessing to start a new work. As Lord Ganesh is Lord of wisdom and intellect it is therefore good for students.

The 8 Mukhi Rudraksha is graced by Lord Ganesh. He is the Pratham Pujya, the deity who is always invoked first before undertaking any kind of work. His presence is known to bestow intellect with wisdom, stability and removal of hindrances. Where Lord Ganesha is present all obstacles fall away. As per texts like Shrimad Devi Bhagwatam and Padma Purana Lord Kartikeya also blesses the Eight Mukhi Rudraksha.

The Aath Mukhi Rudraksha serves as a magnet for drawing fame, artistic excellence and prosperity. This Rudraksha is known to control the malefic effects of Rahu. The 8 Mukhi Rudraksha blesses the wearer with keen intellect to overcome obstacles.

The 8 Mukhi Ganesh Rudraksha is very auspicious as it has a trunk like formation on an 8 Mukhi Rudraksha. The Eight Mukhi Ganesh Rudraksha is blessed by Lord Ganesh and when it has the trunk like formation it is considered to be Lord Ganesh Himself and is also considered most auspicious.

The Aath Mukhi Ganesh Rudraksha is said to control the malefic effects of Rahu, the Ganesha Rudraksha is beneficial for removing obstacles and ensuring success.

Ganesh Puja

In Vedic culture Lord Ganesh is known as Pratham Pujya and is always worshipped before starting any Pooja or Homa. Lord Ganesh removes hurdles and obstacles in all endeavors that one takes up.

It is performed during any auspicious beginning like commencing a business etc.

  • • It is performed to overcome ailments.
  • • It is beneficial for education, marriage, health and wealth.

Lord Ganesh is the bestower of success, intelligence, education, knowledge, wisdom, talent as well as wealth & prosperity. He is Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles and hurdles. Goddess Lakshmi is the bestower of wealth. Anyone who worships her with full devotion is blessed with wealth and material comforts.

To get the benefit of both the Deities, they are usually worshipped together before starting any important work like a new business, house construction or any other undertaking, or on festivals related to Lord Ganesh or Devi Lakshmi. This Puja is considered to be very effective in toning down miseries related to hurdles & obstacles and financial scarcity.
