Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesh. It is believed that Lord Ganesha was born in Bhadrapada month during Shukla Paksha. On this day, Lord Ganesha is worshipped as the God of wisdom, good fortune and prosperity.

It is believed that Lord Ganesha was born during Madhyahna Kala; hence Ganesh Puja is preferred to perform during Madhyahna.

Once the idol of Ganpati is established in the Puja place the Puja vidhi begins.

  • • Begin with a Pranaprathistha, i.e. invoking the idol of Lord Ganesh.
  • • This is followed by the ‘Shhodashopachara’ which is the 16 ways to paying tribute to Lord Ganesha.
  • • Chant Mantras during every ritual
  • • Offer five flowers in Anjali to the idol while chanting mantras
  • • Modak, the favorite prasad of Ganpati is prepared.
  • • Red Sandal paste is applied to the Lord.
  • • Offer new clothes to the Lord and arrange diyas in front of the idol
  • • Offer flowers and different food items.
  • • Arrange Puja items in a thali (Kalash with coconut, Gangajal, Gomutra, Rosewater, ghee, diya, supari, paan leaves, cloves, cardamom, Durva Grass, coin, Akshat, Panchmeva, Honey, attar, kapur, haldi, dhoop etc.)

Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayak Chaturthi and Ganesh Chauth.

The festival of Ganeshotsav ends after 10 days on Ganesh Visarjan day, also known as Anant Chaturdashi. Devotees on this immerse the idols of Lord Ganesh in a water body after a grand procession.

श्री वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्य कोटी समप्रभा
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्व-कार्येशु सर्वदा॥

Shree Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha
Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva-Kaaryeshu Sarvada॥

ॐ एकदन्ताय विद्धमहे, वक्रतुण्डाय धीमहि,
