Description:

Hartalika Teej is observed in the Bhadrapada month during Shukla Paksha Tritiya. It is celebrated one day before Ganesh Chaturthi. During the festival, the idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati made with clay are worshipped for marital bliss.

According to legend, Goddess Parvati was taken to a forest by her friend so that she could not marry Lord Vishnu. Goddess Parvati’s father thought that she was kidnapped hence the day is known as Hartalika. Hartalika is a combination to two words Harat which means abduction and Aalika which means female friend.

In Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Hartalika Teej is known as Gowri Habba and is celebrated to get the blessing of Goddess Gowri.
